The North Carolina Supreme Court Historical Society is a private, non-profit organization created almost three decades ago to preserve our state's legal history and to educate our citizens about our court system. The Society is exceptionally proud of its participation in the 200th Anniversary of the Supreme Court of North Carolina during 2019 and into this year.

The Society was deeply involved with the planning, fundraising, and financing of numerous events commemorating this historic milestone. The Society oversaw the formal Gala celebrating the Court's birthday. The Society assisted with the creation and funding of the Law and Justice exhibit at the North Carolina Museum of History. The Society contributed several items displayed in this exhibit which continues its run at the museum. Additionally, the Society is particularly proud of its partnership with Tom Earnhardt in the production of a television documentary for UNC-TV entitled The North Carolina Supreme Court at 200: Stability and Change.

In addition to its work in support of the Supreme Court's 200th Anniversary, the Society redoubled its efforts this year, despite the current COVID crisis, to serve as a major collector and repository of documents and historical objects reflecting our state's judicial history. For example, the Society is pleased to report that it acquired an oil portrait of Justice John Louis Taylor from his direct descendent, Marysasser Holloway. The Society was also pleased to acquire an engraved portrait of Justice Heriot Clarkson, a gift of Margaret Dickson. The late Justice Harry C. Martin's son, J. Matthew Martin, made several gifts to the Society of photographs of the Court taken from his father's personal papers.

Of course, the current COVID epidemic has affected the Society just as it has most other organizations this year. The Society has not been able to hold its usual in-person meetings or any fundraising activities. In fact, how best to attempt to conduct our annual meeting and election is currently an important issue under careful review.

Please help us continue the important work of the Society by joining or renewing your current membership now! You may join or renew online below or by mailing your membership form with your payment.

We thank you for your continued support of the Society, as we look forward with anticipation to 2021.
